The title of this inaugural post might lead the reader (you) to believe that I either A) have terrible hygiene habits, or B) have an in-depth reason for not brushing my hair regularly. Perhaps I have a deep-set belief that hair is healthier if it isn’t brushed. Or maybe I am doing my darnedest to help the environment by not owning hunks of plastic that will eventually end up in landfills. What a thought! Some heroes truly don’t wear capes!
Unfortunately, my habit of wearing messy buns and baseball caps has nothing to do with health, beauty, nor the environment.
You know why I avoid my hairbrush?
I’m freakin’ busy!
“Elsa, what the heck are you doing trying to write a blog if you’re so dang busy?”
I’ll tell you. I need it. And I think someone else might need this blog, too. My life is beautiful, wild chaos. I work full time as a registered nurse, and when I’m not at work, I am at home with our two youngest boys doing my best to keep them alive. I am also in the process of getting my bachelor’s degree in nursing. My words are the words of a working mom, a stay-at-home mom, a homemaker, a student, and a nurse. The words of a woman. Maybe I don’t have time to brush my hair. Maybe I can only handle tossing it up in a messy bun or putting on a baseball cap. That is perfectly fine. My hairdo (and whatever pride I have left) will survive another day.
So here I am, tapping away at my keyboard while I take my second pumping break of my 12ish hour urgent care shift. This is my escape – to write about the things we women need to breathe out loud to the world. Here’s to many more pumping break blog posts! I look forward to relating to you and I hope you gain some relief in knowing that there is another mama out there who doesn’t always prioritize brushing her hair.
(I do, however, make the time to brush my teeth)
